FBI Director James Comey confirmed that the bureau is investigating not only Russian interference in the 2016 election, but possible ties between the Russian government and the Donald Trump presidential campaign.

“The FBI is investigating the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 election, and that includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia’s efforts,” Comey said during testimony before Congress on Monday morning.

While the FBI has a typical policy of not confirming the existence of ongoing investigations, Comey cited extraordinary circumstances and public interest to justify revealing the investigation.

During the last months of the election, it was revealed that the Russian government had hacked Democratic National Committee servers and leaked emails that were considered damaging to the Hillary Clinton campaign.

The CIA and the FBI have since confirmed that they believe the Russian government was seeking to hurt Clinton and boost Trump’s chances in the election.

Comey did not elaborate on any evidence the FBI might have on possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.
